“SURVIVAL IN THE ICE”

By Glenn Hayton, Schoharie County NYSSA Director
Just a thought: If you plan on crossing any ice this year, take a moment of your time to watch this series of
three YOUTUBE videos made by “Dr Popsicle” (Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht, a hypothermical expert from
Manitoba, Canada) as he demonstrates what happens when he drives his snowmobile through the ice.
There are three short videos. The last clip will make you think about your snowmobile suit. Most of all you
should be carrying ice picks and a way to start a fire. One brand of ice pick I'm impressed with are called the
"Pick of Life". They are a plastic
-
covered steel spike with a retractable spring cover and an orange parachute
cord. You drape the cord over the back of your neck, take a pick in each hand, put your snowmobile jacket
on, and then stuff the picks back into the arms of your jacket.
Ice Picks can only work when
you're
carrying them, not your sled. So be careful and have a
safe
snowmobiling experience.
